Proba-3 Mission Send off Deferred to December 5 Because of Identified Peculiarity: ISRO
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced that the launch of the PSLV-C59/Proba-3 mission, initially scheduled for 16:08 IST on December 4, 2024, has been postponed to December 5, 2024, at 16:12 IST. The delay was prompted by an anomaly detected in the European Space Agency's (ESA) Proba-3 spacecraft during pre-launch checks.
Key Announcement and Updates
At 3:19 p.m. IST on December 4, ISRO shared the update on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating:
"Due to an anomaly detected in PROBA-3 spacecraft, PSLV-C59/PROBA-3 launch rescheduled to tomorrow, December 5, 2024, at 16:12 hours."
The announcement came as key ISRO officials communicated the news to media personnel gathered at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota to witness the launch.
Earlier in the day, at 3:08 p.m., ISRO had reported that the countdown was progressing smoothly. Despite the unforeseen delay, officials emphasized the importance of ensuring mission readiness before proceeding with the launch.
About the PSLV-C59/Proba-3 Mission
The PSLV-C59 mission marks the 61st flight of ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and the 26th deployment of the PSLV-XL configuration. This mission, led by NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) with ISRO's technical support, is tasked with placing ESA's Proba-3 satellites into a highly elliptical orbit.
Proba-3, short for Project for Onboard Autonomy, consists of two satellites weighing approximately 550 kg combined. These spacecraft are designed for advanced formation-flying experiments, aiming to demonstrate precise control in orbit to enable new scientific and operational capabilities.
Importance of the Proba-3 Mission
The Proba-3 mission is a landmark project for ESA, focusing on advanced technologies in spacecraft autonomy and formation flying. It will pave the way for future space missions requiring multiple satellites to work cohesively, such as in astronomical observation or Earth monitoring.
For ISRO, the PSLV-C59 mission adds to its impressive track record of delivering high-profile international payloads while showcasing its collaboration with global space agencies like ESA.
Ensuring Precision and Safety
The delay underscores ISRO's commitment to precision and safety. Detecting and addressing anomalies during pre-launch preparations is a standard procedure to safeguard mission success and the payload's integrity.
Rescheduled Launch
The mission is now slated to lift off at 16:12 IST on December 5, 2024, barring any further technical issues. ISRO’s ability to promptly reschedule the launch highlights its operational flexibility and dedication to reliability in delivering space missions.
As anticipation builds, the successful deployment of Proba-3 is expected to contribute significantly to advancements in space technology and international collaboration.
